I walked in the public space of my city Lausanne (CH), and for a week I transformed into a cis man, my male alter ego “Karlos”. In a drag-king fashion and with the help of make-up, wigs, prosthetics and clothes, I then followed men of all types and ages in order to observe and copy their body language.

Deeply inspired by the growth of feminist conversations as well as by artists like Adrian Piper, Katarzyna Kozyra and Diane Torr, I wanted to elaborate my own gender transgression. For a brief moment in time and space, I tried to decipher the “masculine attitude”, this often cited “masculine body” – while also trying to understand my own view on masculinity.

This project mixes performance documentation, texts (notes from the week of the performance), and self-portraits.

Who has never dreamed of slipping into the skin of another gender for a moment? More precisely, what woman has never fantasized about walking through public spaces as a boy, just to be left alone, just to become the king of the sidewalk?
