Laurin Schaub engages with the craft of ceramics in our era and ponders: what is pottery today, and what becomes of a centuries-old craft when faced with industrial aesthetics and digital logic? He works manually in the traditional way, drawing upon contemporary aesthetic references and technical aids. For instance, the individual parts of the porcelain vases from the A.Part series are crafted using 3D-printed tools, formally referencing industrially manufactured semi-finished products. Similarly, the objects from the Analog.y project, shaped on a potter’s wheel, are produced through a continuous interplay of manual and digital techniques. With a laptop and potter’s wheel working hand in hand, this creates a juxtaposition of two mindsets. A more intuitive approach led to Relief. Here, a roughly cut industrial foam product served as inspiration for designing a series of table objects made of cast glass. This fusion of tradition and innovation may redefine ceramics, bridging the past with the future in a unique narrative.
