The era of manuscripts is long gone. Today’s norm revolves almost exclusively around printed matter, making the manual reproduction of texts absurd and obsolete. A certain poetry and beauty emanate from the imperfections, however, time and gestures intrinsic to calligraphy that seem to lend a rare and precious character to manuscripts as a calligraphic work is unique and cannot be replicated identically. The concept of automated calligraphy is crystallised halfway between ancestral practices and contemporary technologies, replacing hand gestures with mechanical movements. The CNC machine (or Pen Plotter) can imitate these gestures with precision, as well as executing more complex movements that are impossible to achieve manually. The automation of calligraphy is an attempt to give handwritten texts new aspects of reproducibility, precision and efficiency, while trying to preserve the aura of calligraphy, with its distinct movements, tools and aesthetic.
