1893 is a typeface exclusively developed for the Swiss football club FC Basel 1893. Originally conceived as a kit typeface, it has been adapted as a titling typeface for various communication channels, such as the back numbers of players’ jerseys and the scoreboard during games.
The project was grounded in research exploring the typographic genre of kit fonts, the historical context of the club’s back numbers, and the typographic legacy of Basel. The aim was to authentically reflect these influences while acknowledging the diverse shapes seen throughout the club’s history.
In adapting historical influences to the present, the typeface was designed as a variable tool, featuring an outline and inline axis, allowing transitions between round, angular and inverted outlines, in combination with round or squared inlines. This system allows the generation of six different versions, providing the club with flexibility in its visual identity.
