Stepping into metal workshops in times gone by, the only women present were often the ones on raunchy calendars. Women, along with trans and genderqueer people, remain underrepresented in metalwork, welding being just one instance of a larger structural problem of opportunities being gate-kept by men. The Feminist Welding Club, founded by the artist during her MA studies, challenges gender stereotypes and disrupts the tropes of who is made to feel comfortable in the workshop. Through open welding sessions and the community that forms around them, the club acts as both a resource and a statement — demystifying the “macho” image of welding and showing how it is in fact about confidence, precision and patience. As the final outcome, the artist presented an installation: a model break room for the club. Every object had been welded by women, pieces in steel were made by club participants, and the pieces in aluminium were welded by Zimmermann herself. In the Club, metalwork becomes more than a skill; it becomes a space for exchange, creativity and community.
