The Tunnel poster series is a biannual poster edition for a local cultural venue in Glarus. The name Tunnel comes from the fact that the entrance to the club is on the side of an underpass with a round arch. All posters have been printed manually on letterpress printing presses that are around 60 years old. A physical printing form has to be produced for each poster, size and colour pass. Due to this slow and meticulous process, materials and resources have to be used mindfully—this also helps to keep the project within budget. For this reason, the labour-intensive hand-cut linoleum shapes for each poster have been used for both the small and large versions of the posters. This technical restriction in production is also one of the main visual restrictions in design—and a great challenge to keep each one of these large and small posters visually compelling.
The Tunnel poster series provides impulses on the use of resources in print, on the sensible use of the poster medium and on the question of the value and significance attached to our cultural heritage of letterpress printing today.
